Today Is the Day of Salvation

By Gil Rugh

There are only two groups of people in the world—those who are being saved and those who are perishing.

Jesus said, “He who is not with Me is against Me” (Matt. 12:30). There are no people in the middle. Until you place your faith in Jesus Christ, you are among the perishing. If you die in that state, you have no hope, your final destination will be hell.

The Apostle Paul wrote, “Behold, today is the day of salvation” (2 Cor. 6:2). That statement could not be any clearer. The day of salvation is not when you’re ready, it’s today!

Clearly we can’t tell God, “Come back tomorrow, I’ll mull it over.” God gives us the opportunity to hear the Word, hear the truth concerning Christ today. We are not promised that we will hear or understand it tomorrow or in 20 years.

We ought to fall on our face and tell God, “Thank you, Lord. I want to place my faith in Your Son, I believe He died for me.”

Tomorrow may be too late and yet, I often hear people say, “I’m going to trust Christ on my deathbed.” They think they will have their wits, they think they will understand their need and that they will be all right.

They could not be more wrong. None of us know what will happen tonight. None of us know if we will die in our sleep before tomorrow. We don’t know whether God will give us the opportunity to believe in His Son tomorrow.

We have all shared the gospel with people who say, “I’m going to think about it, I’m not ready.” The problem is that “Today is the day of salvation! With the passing of time the perishing heart becomes harder until the person decides they don’t want to hear the gospel anymore. It is a serious thing to be exposed to God’s truth and disregard it.

When we don’t make a decision to believe the gospel, we are making a decision to remain among the perishing. That is a frightening and terrible place to be. All eternity hangs on our response to the gospel. Come to Christ now. Today is the day of salvation.
