Why Should We Worry?
Jesus drew illustrations from nature to show how His Father provides all our needs and that nothing is accomplished by worrying. Talking about clothing, Jesus said,
And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin (Matt. 6:28).
Spring is a beautiful time of the year; the flowers are blooming with all of their beautiful colors and intricate designs on display. Yet they put no effort into designing their appearance. Jesus spoke of their splendor:
Yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these (v. 29).
Solomon, with all that he had—the wisest man who ever lived, and one of the wealthiest—was not clothed as splendidly as the flowers of the fields.
Jesus continued:
But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith! (v. 30).
The grass is transitory; the flowers will die. The people of Palestine dried out flowers and grass and used them for fuel in their furnaces. Do you think God would so beautifully clothe the grass and the flowers of the field, which are later thrown into a furnace, and then say, “Oh, I forgot. Gil needs clothes! Oh well, I’ll remember that next year.” Look at how well-fed the birds are. Do you think God would feed all of them and then say, “Oh yes, I forgot. Gil did not eat this month!”
Most of us spend an awful lot of time worrying. However, doing so will not change anything. Our God provides everything we need, and He is sovereign over all things. Everything that comes into our lives has been sifted through His hands. Why should we worry?
